The Clinical Psychologist, the Dean and I had to go a conference in Santa Fe this week. So, Carol, the psychologist, suggested that we spend a couple of days in Taos at a retreat before journeying on to Santa Fe. Carol had a place for us to stay in Taos, a house owned by her very good friends; a house, it turns out, that is on the cover on the current issue of my New Mexico magazine. The pictures in the magazine are lovely, but they do not do the house justice. They call the house the hobbit house, because of its whimsical design--and because staying there is just like staying in the Shire!
Anyway, we arrive at the Hobbit house, which is located outside of Taos in the high dessert. The views are beautiful, the mountains in the distance on one side, the gorge and valley in the distance on the other, and the house itself is surrounded by sage and scrubbrush. I have to duck to move through this tiny opening to get to my bedroom (The door original to the adobe house that used to stand there). and sleep beneath an iron bed where the bed posts were trees and overhead, leaves from the trees came together to form a canopy! It was lovely, and the 3 of us planned to get up early the next morning before we started work, and take a hike in the National forest that backs up to the house.
However, overnight, the landscape underwent a dramatic change. Several inches of snow fell, blanketing the earth with snow everywhere. And no cell service or TV! It was great. WE got a lot of work done, all the while enjoying the beautiful view.
One of the most unique things, the shower has a full length window, so while you shower, you have this beautiful view of the gorge in the distance and snowflakes fell all around you! It was a first for me, showering and viewing the snow storm at the same time. Here is the view from the shower:
I hope to have more pictures soon, but of course they wouldn't do the house or the land justice!
We are now in Santa Fe, where the sun is shining and the shopping is great! The conference starts today.
